Five Virtual Market Tours To Whet Your Travel Appetite

September 2, 2016 globallocavore 1 Comment

Strolling through local markets and immersing myself in the day-to-day life of a destination is one of my favourite travel activities. I love examining the variety of produce, taking countless colourful photographs and soaking in the overwhelming sensory experience.

Five Virtual Market Tours

When I can’t get out to explore the world myself, I like to take a virtual trip with my favourite bloggers. The videos below are made by four fantastic Canadian couples and one American all-star. I guarantee these virtual market tours from the five corners of the globe will whet your appetite for international travel!

Europe: Christmas Market, Germany

Kristen and Siya of Hopscotch The Globe visit a seasonal Christmas market in Hamburg, Germany and sample tons of delicious food. While these markets may have become a bit touristy, I know lots of locals still take part in the Christmas cheer. I love that Kristen and Siya give detailed explanations about what they are trying and often highlight how the food was made or how it relates to German culture.

Oceania: Queen Victoria Market, Australia

Deb and Dave of The Planet D are completely silly and wonderful in this guided tour of Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne, Australia. They visit a wide array of stalls featuring food, drink, desserts and even condiments. I love that they speak to the vendors and learn a little bit about the people behind the food.

South America: Mercado Municipal, Brazil

Ayngelina (and Dave by proxy) of Bacon Is Magic visit São Paulo’s busy Mercado Municipal to explore both the retail and wholesale parts of the market. I like that the video is short and sweet with catchy music, but I would have loved some commentary on the food and drinks they sampled.

Asia: Warorot Market, Thailand

Mark from Migrationology visits Warorot Market in Chiang Mai – a well known market for both Thais and foreigners. I also visited Warorot when I was in Thailand and had an incredibly delicious meal for less than a dollar! I love his obvious enthusiasm for trying unique, regional foods and the fact that he includes prices in local currency.

North America: La Merced Market, Mexico

Nick and Dariece from Goats on the Road take a tour with Our Eat Mexico to visit Le Merced Market, a traditional public market in the historic part of Mexico City. This tour shows visitors around the labyrinth of a market and introduces them to the best regional dishes. I love that Nick & Dariece provide titles with the name of each dish along with their own reaction to the flavours and that they show the gritty food stalls in all their glory.

Without a doubt, visiting food markets is a highlight of travelling for me. Each market has such a different scene and is filled with unique items. All markets offer a tiny peek into the world beyond the tourist destinations and for that, I’ll love them forever!

Stay Tuned! I’ll be sharing more round ups of great food bloggers, vloggers, authors and influences soon. If you like hearing about interesting food and travel projects, subscribe here to receive my latest posts!

Have you been to any of these markets in person? Which one was your favourite virtual market tour?

You can explore the world without leaving home when you watch these five captivating virtual market tours from every corner of the globe.
